This coming weekend, Chicago will host the
Chicago gourmet event, with lots of chefs and food to taste. I will obviously sacrifice myself and attend, in order to taste the food and be able to report back to you loyal readers, like I did last year. But this year there is an additional bonus for you readers who are into wine and food: a nice giveaway organized by Robert Mondavi.
Robert Mondavi is a very famous winery from the Napa Valley, in California. I visited last year, and I loved some of their wine, in particular their white called
fume' blanc. The winery is also wonderful from an architectural point of view, so if you are ever in Napa - which is one of the nicest places I have visited in the States, and that reminds me so much of the Tuscan countryside - go check them out (here is their
facebook page, that you can like if you like wine...).
Mondavi wines will be showcased at the Chicago Gourmet, with a seminar hosted by Ted Allen, a food and wine expert famous in America for his appearances on some popular TV shows, like
Queer eye for the straight guy and, more recently,
Chopped. Allen will explain how best to pair food and wine.
So,
what's in the give away? It includes a Robert Mondai chef's apron, a Sigg steel water bottle, a keychain and Ted Allen's cookbook
The food you want to eat.
How can you win the giveaway? There is a very easy way to do it: just post a comment here on the blog before Sunday, September 25th, close of play, telling me which is your favorite recipe that contains wine, and I will pick the best idea. You can also tweet me your answer if you want at
@tuscanfoodie, or post it as a comment on my
Tuscan Foodie Facebook page. That simple!
Good luck!

I will go with red wine poached pears!
Hi Jonathan - good call for a classic dish!
Ruth - I love red wine poached pears...actually any fruit poached in red wine sound pretty good to me.
I can't say I've tried all his recipes, but I love Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's approach to food and cooking. His series of TV shows "River Cottage" are amazing. You should check them out.
His Squirrel Stew calls for wine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3IaSNjur25s&feature=relmfu
And this delicious looking bacon-wrapped Festive Pate calls for port (that's a wine, right?): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4QfBEFVBAw&feature=relmfu
Lamb shanks are a New Zealand classic. It used to be a really cheap cut of meat readily available from the farm but it's now trendy and expensive.
It is deliciously fabulous braised in red wine. Here's a recipe from Donna Hay:

Brian, the squirrel recipe blew me away!
Ginger Parkin: I will have to try that. I must admit I have never cooked lamb...
My uncle makes a mean beef short rib. He uses really good wine and eats it with even more expensive wine. Here's a recipe that calls for 3 bottles of red.

Wow, 3 bottles of red is a lot of wine for a dish. But I know of a couple of recipes that call for (almost) the same amount, so I am not totally shocked!
And the winner is...Ginger Parkin! I love the idea of the lamb shanks, and I am going to try that soon.
Thanks to everyone else who participated!
Ginger, I will be in touch to get your info so that you can receive the package.
